E3 08: Playstation Video Store Now Available

The Video Store that Sony announced this morning has finally gone live bringing PS3 users the chance to rent or buy movies and TV shows. There’s a good selection of TV shows and Movies that you probably won’t see on the Xbox Live Marketplace such as Prison Break and 24. There are only a few studios that supports the PS Video Store, but there are some exclusive studios that only support Sony such as the Military Channel.

Based on the pricing, it’s similar on how Xbox 360 prices their TV shows and Movies. The interface of the Video Store is very clean and organized. You’ll be pleased with the interface once you log on your Playstation Store. In the Playstation 3 Video Store, you have an ability to purchase the digital copy of the movie, not like in Xbox Live, it’s all about renting. The store gives you access to HD movies and TV shows as well, but the prices are different.

It’s old news now… but well worth mentioning that the service is not available outside of the United States. As a Canadian I was quite upset that once again Sony didn’t bother to insert those two small words in their conference… “this service will be live in the U.S. PSN store tonight”… so easy, yet they seem to assume that Canadians or other countries don’t bother watching E3. No they didn’t bother inserting the initials “U.S.”… and so like many other Canadians I was sitting up late that night checking the store in the vain hope that the service was for our PSN stores too. :(
